Religion as an ecosystem

Joel Halldorf, associate professor of church history at the School of Theology in Stockholm, about the events in the Pentecostal church in Knutby (Expressen 2020-01-14). He also talks about the development of the Pentecostal movement in Sweden, partly based on his own experiences.
"[R]eligious traditions are structured as ecosystems, where different truths balance each other. So-called heresies do not arise primarily from the addition of new ideas. Instead, they stem from snatching a truth out of context, and overbearing it.
The religious great traditions have been able to guide people for millennia thanks to their complexity and ambiguity. Fanaticism, on the other hand, is based on rationalism and seeks unambiguousness. You take a piece of the truth and make it the whole truth. That method unites ISIS fighters, Christian sect leaders and a lot of political extremism."
